
Give Your Old Blow Molding Machine a Second Wind
You’ve got a blow molding machine that’s seen better days. The frame is still rock solid—it’s a tank—but the cycle times are just dragging. I get asked all the time: “Can I actually speed things up by just swapping out the old infrared heating elements, or do I need to drop a fortune on a brand new machine?” The short answer? Yes, you can. But it all comes down to how much heat you’re packing into those tubes and the wavelength you’re using. Let’s talk about heat density. Old-school quartz tubes often struggle to heat PET evenly. It’s frustrating. You end up with hot spots or cold zones that mess up your bottles. We build high-wattage infrared tubes specifically to cut down that preheating time. By cramming more wattage into every millimeter, you’re pushing energy into the PET preform way faster. That’s how you crank up the machine speed. If you go with a higher voltage spec, you get a real thermal punch. Just a heads-up: check your power draw. Make sure your transformers can handle the extra load, otherwise, you’ll be spending your afternoon resetting tripped breakers. The nitty-gritty stuff We use high-purity fused quartz. Why? Because when things get screaming hot, you don’t want your tubes warping. For the fit, we stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re the industry standard for a reason—they just work. You can slide them in without having to weld new brackets or get creative with your tools. Some of our tubes even have a special coating. Instead of just scorching the surface of the plastic, this coating helps the heat soak deep into the wall of the preform. It’s the difference between a surface burn and a deep, even melt. The catch (because there’s always one) Better heating isn’t a magic wand. When you push more output to get more bottles per hour, you’re also dumping a lot more waste heat into the oven area. If your cooling fans are tired or your ventilation is weak, your preforms will overheat and warp. It’s a balancing act. Match your tube output to what your cooling system can actually handle, and you’ll keep the scrap pile small.
