When you’re picking out infrared heaters for the bathroom, your first instinct might be to just go for the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really just about finding the sweet spot for the size of your room. If you go too big, you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill—and you might actually overheat the fixture. Go too small? You’ll be shivering in the shower waiting for a warmth that’s never coming.
Finding the Right Fit
Think about how far the heat actually has to travel to reach you. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a single 250W to 400W lamp usually does the trick. It’s quick, simple, and enough to take the chill off. But for those bigger master bathrooms (around 8m² to 12m²), you’ll want a few more lamps working together. I’d suggest aiming for 600W to 1000W in total, but instead of one giant heater, split that across three or four smaller ones. This way, the heat spreads out across the floor instead of just hitting one spot.
The “Hot Spot” Problem
There’s a trade-off when you crank up the wattage. Sure, a high-wattage lamp warms up faster, but it puts a lot of stress on the quartz glass. Plus, if you use one massive 1200W lamp instead of three 400W ones, you end up with a “hot spot.” You’ll feel like you’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet—scorching right underneath, but freezing the second you take a step to the left. Spreading the load across a few lamps keeps the whole room feeling cozy and consistent.
A Quick Warning on Wiring
Before you start plugging things in, take a look at your circuit. These heaters can pull a lot of power the moment you flip the switch. You want to make sure your wiring can handle that spike without any issues. And if you’re just replacing an old bulb, please stick to the wattage the manufacturer asked for. Trying to squeeze a 600W lamp into a socket built for 400W is a great way to melt your connectors. Not a great look, and definitely not safe.
