
Fixing Hot Spots and Thin Walls in Your KHS Blow Molding Lines
There’s nothing more frustrating than pulling a batch of bottles off the line and seeing those thin walls, weird pearlescent streaks, or—worst of all—deformed shapes. Usually, it’s not the machine itself. It’s the heat. When your KHS setup isn’t hitting a consistent temperature, it almost always comes down to two things: what the IR lamps are actually putting out and how they’re sitting in the oven.
The “Why” Behind the Heat
We built our replacement lamps to fit the OEM KHS specs exactly. Most of these lamps use short-wave infrared to punch through the PET preform quickly. Here’s the thing: if the filament isn’t centered perfectly, you get “cold spots.” It sounds like a small detail, but when the heat source is off-axis, your bottles pay the price. You also have to be careful with wattage. If it’s too low, the preform doesn’t get warm enough. Too high? You’ll scorch the plastic unless you’re constantly fighting with your oven’s airflow to compensate.
Getting the Fit Right
We use high-purity quartz glass because these things go through a brutal cycle of heating and cooling. We also added specific coatings that bounce the heat back toward the preform. It saves energy and keeps the oven frames from getting ridiculously hot to the touch. And we didn’t overcomplicate the install. Whether you’re using R7s or those specialized SK sockets, these are drop-in replacements. We spent a lot of time on the pins to make sure they don’t arc. A loose connection might seem minor, but it causes voltage drops, and that’s how you end up with inconsistent heating across the row.
A Few Real-World Tips
Once these are in, you’ll notice you aren’t spending nearly as much time fiddling with the oven temperature. The thermal field stays stable, so you waste fewer bottles during startup. But a quick heads-up: high-density IR lamps pull more power. If you’re switching to a higher output lamp to speed up your cycles, just double-check your wiring and breakers first. You don’t want to trip a breaker mid-shift. Also, remember that no lamp is magic. If your ventilation is poor, they’ll burn out faster, no matter who made them.
